Teaching Secularism

The golden calf of education - America's idol

How many times have you heard Christian parents say that they are glad that our schools are "secular" because that means they will not impose another religion on our children? They do not understand that "worldliness" and "loving the world" is the great enemy of God. (James 4:4)

The synonym of "secular" is "profane". It means to treat something that is sacred with irreverence, to desecrate and debase it, and in general to disrespect sacred things. "Secularize" means to make secular, to convert from sacred to secular possession or uses, and to make worldly. Is it acceptable to convert our children to worldliness as long as they are not exposed to another religion? Secularism is not neutral to God! By definition and in practice, it opposes God!

In Ezekiel 22 God lists a catalog of sins which bring His judgment on a nation and in verse 8 He says, "You have despised My holy things and profaned My Sabbaths". In Leviticus, 20 God proclaims a death sentence on any parent who gives any of his offspring to an idol because in doing so that person profanes the holy name of God by irreverence and disrespect. In 1940, Christian writer Arthur Pink wrote to his friend in America the following:

"The U.S.A. is making a golden calf of education and you must not be surprised if God does not yet grind it to powder, cast it on the waters, and make you drink it."

The schools in America formerly honored the name and character of God because our nation reverenced Him. Our nation now reverences education more than God. Have our schools become secular because our nation has become secular or has our nation become secular because our schools have become secular?

The Azariah -Jehoshaphat Movement

Azariah was a prophet sent from God with the following message to the nation of Israel:

"Now for a long season Israel hath been without the true God, and without a teaching priest, and without the Law." (2 Chronicles 15:3, KJV)

Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, was embolded by the Spirit of God to tear down the high places of the idols in Judah. He then sent "teaching priests" into every city in the land to teach the people and bring them back to God.

May God once again give that same Spirit to our churches? He has already opened the door, over the last thirty years, by preparing home-schooling parents and grandparents to teach. These dedicated servants consider this to be a calling and a ministry, not a vocation. He has prepared master teachers on every subject to put their teachings on video. He has given others the task of preparing excellent teaching manuals, progress reports and accreditation standards. Will the churches, who have the facilities, join with these present day "teaching priests" to turn education back to God?

May the Lord find us so doing when He returns!
